Recent Work
In early January I caught the Willem de Kooning retrospective at MOMA in New York, needless to say I was awe struck by the show, so much great work all in one place. I got to spend a lot of time with each painting; it was a real education for me as I learned so many new things in his work that I hadn't before considered. Whenever I see a large body of work by a painter I admire, I like to do interpretations of what I remember or feel from the work. I have done this with Monet, Francis Bacon, Joan Mitchell and even Elizabeth Murray. I don't try to do copies, just my own feel of the work. I let the show float around my head for a few weeks; I realized that the paintings that were staying with me the most were his black and white paintings from the late 1940s. I've wanted to do paintings with this idea myself for a long time, so I set about the task of doing eight to twelve paintings on paper using a minimum palette of black, white and red. I have always loved the paintings of Kline and Motherwell from this same period, I know they all knew one another and were bouncing ideas off of each other and learning in their respective ways; so I feel with my black and white studies I could get just a bit into their thinking and process. So with that said, below are eight of the twelve that I have so far completed. Click on an image to view it larger.
