Barry Masteller inaugurates 'Monterey Now' series at MMA
By LISA CRAWFORD WATSON
Herald Correspondent
An art museum, if it is to achieve an appreciable standing in any community, curates and collects some of the most exceptional art in the world. Yet sometimes communities end up detached, even estranged, from the local art museum. Exceptional should not mean inaccessible.
That's what the Monterey Museum of Art is striving to accomplish with its new invitational, biannual series titled "Monterey Now," which focuses on contemporary artists residing in Monterey County.
The idea came from MMA's director of collections and exhibitions, Marcelle Polednik, who was looking for something different, even edgy -- something contemporary that would solicit various local artists to reveal a new body of work at the museum. Modeled after nationally acclaimed series such as the Whitney Museum of Art's Bucksbaum Award, the mission of "Monterey Now" according to Polednik, "is to identify and commend local artists who have made a significant contribution to the visual arts, regionally as well as nationally. What everyone is to understand from the title is that the series is about this community and the artists who live here." The inaugural exhibit of "Monterey Now" features recent work by Barry Masteller, one of the Peninsula's most highly regarded artists, who will unveil 10 paintings from his Boulevard Series, never before exhibited in Monterey County."For a number of reasons, Barry was the first artist we asked to participate in the series, Polednik said. He has been an outstanding Peninsula artist for a very long time, in which he has had a long history with the museum. During three solo exhibits and numerous others, including two images in our current 'Monterey Collects' exhibit, our paths have been enmeshed. In this new and exciting series for the museum, it is wonderful to go forward as a team with someone who has been an advocate for the museum and whom the museum has supported for a very long time."
Perhaps the most exciting element of this exhibit is Masteller's departure from his signature landscapes, both soft and sensual as in his "Earth and Sky" series, to these more structural, more linear boulevard cityscapes.
"I fondly remember the phone call from Barry while he was on a visit to New York City," said Lisa Parker, director of Trajan Gallery in Carmel, which will host a comprehensive exhibit of Masteller's work in September. "He was seeing this city again for the first time. This time he explored the streets and buildings from his hotel window perched high above the illuminated surfaces of Manhattan at night.
"He told of the lines he could see created by buildings and painted streets as they cut across one another, bending to permit the passage of a car here, a pedestrian there and all merging to create a new landscape. Barry was at once fascinated and exhilarated, and he was ready to get back to his studio where he would begin what he has titled, the 'Boulevard Paintings.' For those who have followed the international art career of this longtime Monterey County resident, Masteller's work reflects both a return to earlier interpretations as well as who he is and how he represents himself today. His avowed mentors, among them Rembrandt, Turner, Monet, Matisse, Magritte and Ernst, continue to inspire his work, yet the tonalist influence present in his series echoes the aesthetic of early Peninsula tonalists Arthur Mathews, Xavier Martinez and Gottardo Piazzoni.
"This series is a fairly large departure for Barry in terms of subject matter," said Polednik. "He's really created a new category of art making, taking an aesthetic -- tonalism -- that has its roots on the Peninsula, and adding to it a subject matter -- the city -- that has never really been combined with the tonalist aesthetic. It becomes a kind of 'urban tonalism,' which is pretty extraordinary because Barry is using the qualities of light, these effanescent tones, applied to a very contemporary, very urban setting. At once it is a departure but at the same time is contiguous with the style of work he had been doing." Masteller recognizes similarities between his landscapes and recent cityscapes, particularly in the introduction of evening or early light, whether the source emanates from a shop or restaurant window, or the rising or setting sun."I am certainly best known for my landscapes," he said, "and my boulevard paintings are moving in a new direction, so people will likely see them as something very different from what they're used to. In some ways they are and some ways, not."It's always difficult to say what leads to these departures. My landscapes dealt with nature, unaffected by the hand of man -- no roads or bridges or fences or structures -- whereas these boulevard paintings are cityscapes, all about the hand of man. They definitely gave me an opportunity to do work that is more architectural, more linear, which I really like a lot." "Monterey Now" opens with "Boulevard Series" this week on "Third Thursday," when the museum is open to the public. The exhibit will continue through Oct. 29. Meanwhile, on Sept. 16, the museum will present, "In Dialogue: A Conversation between Barry Masteller and Marcelle Polednik," at the museum's La Mirada galleries."From his Surrealist-inspired canvases of the mid-1970s through his poetic landscapes of the late 1990s, Barry Masteller has demonstrated a profound intellectual curiosity and sustained passion for art making," said museum Executive Director Michael Whittington. "The Monterey Museum of Art is honored to celebrate his important contribution to the visual arts community."
